ADHD approach at the Melbourne Chiropractic

Chiropractic and ADD/ADHD approach at the Melbourne Chiropractic & Bedding Clinic

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) is the most commonly reported childhood behavioural disorder, affecting between 3% and 7% of Australian children.

It is characterised by poor attention span, impulsive behaviours, and hyperactivity in some children. The diagnositc criteria are strictly observational, and there are no objective laboratory tests to confirm that diagnosis.

Subjective evaluations of annoying, distracting, or inattentive behaviour makes the "diagnosis" of ADD/ADHD speculative at best.

The most common medical "treatment" for this controversial "disease" is precriptions of Methylphenidate (Ritalin), a Class II controlled and addictive substance. ADHA drugs, such as Ritalin, are known to carry serious side effects, including insomnia, changes in personality, cardiotoxicity, heart attack, stroke and even sudden death. In the UK, nine children have died after taking the drugs. The long-term effects of this drug on children is unknown, but the side-effects, including addiction, are becoming better understood.

What is ADD/ADHD?

Although it's exact "cause" is unknown, major aetiologic contributors include adverse responses to good additives, intolerances to foods, sensitivites to environmental chemicals, molds, and fungi, and exposures to neurodevelopmental toxins, such as heavy metals and organohalide pollutants.

In the study 'Chiropractic Management of Hyperactivity,' (JMPT 1989), a Doctor of Chiropractic, a Professor of Psychology, and an Associate Professor of Special Education investigated the effectiveness of Chiropractic with emotional, learning and behavioural impairments.

The investigation examined the effect of Chiropractic treatmnt on students with learning and behavioural impairments resulting from neurological dysfunction. A group of 12 ADHD students receiving medication were compared to a group of 12 ADHD students receiving Chiropractic care. Hyperactvity and attentiveness improved initially (not gross and fine motor co-ordination) among the medication group. The medication's effectiveness gradually decreased requiring higher dosages. The medication group also experienced personality changes, loss of appetite and insomnia.

The Chiropractic Group experienced improvement in both hyperactivity and attentiveness, and in gross and fine motor co-ordination. The end result was that Chiropractic care was 20-40% more effective than medication.

The conclusions from the study included "...that Chiropractic... has the potential to become an important non drug intervention for children with hyperactivity."

We believe at the Melbourne Chiropractic & Bedding Clinic that all kids should be under regular Chiropractic Care; espeically those with behavioural or learning difficulties. There is enough evidence and research to support Chiropractic as a front line intervention for these kids.

The other area that needs to be considered is the child's nutrition. Nutrient deficencies are common in ADD/ADHD as well as a diet high in refined carbohydrates (sugar) and preservatives.

  • Make sure your child is under regular Chiropractic Care.

  • Cut down all grains in the child's diet (unless the child is of normal weight) particularly all sources of processed wheat, stop drinking all soft drinks. Period. And that includes "diet" (read the article on the dangers of aspartame for more information).

  • Supplement with a good multimineral and multivitamin such as Tresso B or Multiessentials (available at the practice)

  • Use as fish oil product designed for kids with the correct mix of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (also available at the practice by prescription).
